Gotland in brief:
- Gotland is 170 km long and 50 km wide. The biggest towns are Visby, Hemse, Roma, Slite, Klintehamn and Fårösund. Today the island has a population of around 58,000, two-thirds of whom live in rural areas. Gotland has been part of Sweden since 1645 and has been part of a regional self-government trial since 1997. It is an eco-municipality with an ongoing environmental programme. There is a varied mix of trade and industry, and Gotland has the highest number of small businesses per inhabitant in Sweden. The two main industries are tourism and agriculture.

Transport communications:
Connections to and from mainland Sweden are by 1-7 ferry departures on new high-speed ferries. The boat trip to Visby takes around three hours whether you travel from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn. If you prefer to fly there are connections from Stockholm Arlanda, Stockholm Bromma and Norrköping. The flight takes about 35 minutes and there are 10-30 departures a day.
